Extraordinary theater

Updated: Aug 9, 2024

Valkenburg, in the beautiful burgundian Limburg Hill Country, feels very rich with the Openluchttheater, the oldest open air theater in the Netherlands. During the summer months, cultural history, art and nature come together and provide a unique experience.

The theater opened its gates in 1916, and people praise its unique atmosphere and perfect acoustics.

Partly due to the rise of TV, attendance declined and in the mid-1970s the theater closed its doors. Performances have been held again since 1983, and with renewed focus by the municipality on quality tourism, the theater is thriving as never before, with over 25,000 visitors annually.

The theater has a varied programming of music and theater and is thus increasingly developing into a fixture in Limburg's cultural offerings.

The summer program of 2024 is once again particularly varied with names like Dai Carter, Flemming, The Forunate Sons, K3 Nostalgia, Starman, and in September Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Check out the full schedule here.

A nice touch is that Hotel 1711 is only a 7-minute walk from the theater. With so much to do in the immediate area, a mini vacation at Hotel 1711 is definitely worth it.
